Geofort

Children in Museums Award — 2016; Bronze Medal New York Festival —2015

What could be more inspiring than a team of people working together on realising a dream? On a picture-perfect fortress island located in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (a defence line that has played an important part in Dutch history), Bart Bennis and Willemijn Simon-van Leeuwen did just that by building the GeoFort science centre.

Bit by bit they are creating an educational attraction devoted to cartography and navigation, where people of all ages can discover the importance of geolocation in daily life. MMEK’ designed and built the first few of the children’s museum exhibits – and this is an ongoing process. We are proud of the international recognition we received this year when we were named the ‘Best Children’s Museum in the World’ at the annual Children in Museums award ceremony in Graz, Austria.

Different themes and modes of interaction are used to highlight the many different uses of geolocation.
Visitors can navigate a large maze, discover how global positioning systems work, build towers on top of an ‘earthquake platform’, have a ‘map’ made of their head by a scanner, or pretend they are a spy observing the Earth from high up in the sky.

After drafting a detailed master plan, we are working with Geofort to find various ways of incorporating the theme, so as to show visitors the important part that geolocation plays in all of our lives. This has resulted in a number of cool exhibits on the exterior of the fortress and experiences housed in the barracks on the island.

At the moment we are developing a new masterplan with Geofort based onthef future of our Earth.

With educational exhibits such as these, the most important thing is that the experience is fun and challenging. After all, why else would you choose to learn something new?
