Although Expedition Earth had to be completed in just three months time, these time constraints did not affect the project and its impact in any way. All the elements of the project contribute to the overall experience.

The Eco-marathon is an annual event organised by multinational oil and gas company Shell and is held each year in a different part of the world, including Rotterdam in 2012. Shell launched the event back in 1985 as a way of making young people aware of the global energy crisis. When Shell announced it was looking to add a new educational attraction to the event, MMEK teamed up with navigation museum GeoFort to design a thrilling video-based motion ride called Expedition Earth, which takes children right to the centre of the Earth.
The attraction is a modern-day version of Jules Vernes epic novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. From the mobile base station made up of two connected sea containers a total of 30 adventurers at the time can take a motion ride to the heart of our planet.
Expedition Earth is an extremely popular part of the event, and afterwards the passengers really feel like they have been on a journey. Visitors can follow the spectacular journey on large screens, while people also get to experience the actual physical thrill: the attraction literally shakes and trembles. In order to create a journey that was as realistic as possible, MMEK worked closely with earth energy scientists in scripting the video.
Although Expedition Earth had to be completed in just three months time, these time constraints did not affect the project and its impact in any way. All the elements of the project contribute to the overall experience.
