VVV Inspiratiepunten

The concept behind the VVV tourist offices in towns throughout Zeeland province was in need of an overhaul: consumers have changed, and so have their expectations of what services a tourist office should offer and what it should look like. Zeeland province was the first to take up this challenge: Its organisational structure is being redefined, electronic services and products are being upgraded, and the tourist office is strengthening its ties with the provincial authorities. However, the outward appearance of the tourist office could also use an upgrade.

MMEK is working closely with the Zeeland office on developing a new retail format that will be rolled out across all branches in Zeeland province. The new format is designed primarily to impress visitors, although the offices continue to provide information as before and sell a variety of tourist products.

The added value of the new branches is related to the stories being told, the loan objects available from local museums and the opportunities for visitors to interact with the information available.

The design of the Zeeland VVV tourist offices is patterned on the Land in the Sea visual identity previously developed by the province itself. The colour scheme, typeface and images from the visual identity were all used in the design, while the spatial design embodied the quintessential Zeeland spirit. The layout of the offices is open and spacious and the furniture used is sturdy and sustainable.

The tourist offices are structured based on a 20%-80% rule, where a small part is devoted to the wider Zeeland history, while the main focus is on local facts and interests. Since Zeeland is not only known for its beach resorts but is also beloved for its hiking, cycling and touring opportunities, routes and route maps were given prominent places in the store.

As the first of the new-style VVV tourist offices, the Domburg office currently serves as the benchmark for the national VVVs, attracting not only tourists but also interested VVV employees from all over the Netherlands.

Storytelling, exhibitions and services: the trick is to integrate these three elements and have them enhance each other. We spent a lot of time rearranging everything so as to help visitors understand exactly what services are available, while at the same leaving some room for surprise and inspiration during each visit.
